Application for K-12 Educators

 

The NHERI Summer Institute will be held June 4-6, 2017 at the University of Texas in San Antonio (UTSA) for K-12 educators, engineers, and researchers who want to learn more about the Natural Hazards Engineering Research (NHERI) community. K-12 educators will attend only on June 6th and will learn about:

  • The mission of the NHERI program
  • Writing and designing lesson plans for engineering courses
  • Interact with engineers to develop a lesson targeted at engineering learning objectives

All participants—early career professionals and faculty, K-12 educators and administrators, and established professionals and faculty—are welcome to attend.

Preliminary schedule of events:

  • Day 1:
    • NHERI Science Plan
    • Research grant proposal writing
    • San Antonio excursion
  • Day 2:
    • NHERI network research sites
    • Design of current and potential research projects at NHERI sites
    • Networking event
  • Day 3:
    • Educational and community outreach design (TEACHERS MUST ATTEND)
    • Networking event
    • NHERI leadership meetings

The grant does not cover travel expenses for K-12 educators. Local teachers will receive a stipend for participating, designing a lesson plan, and executing the lesson plan in their classrooms.
