Leveraging Python, Jupyter Notebooks, DesignSafe,
and the SimCenter Educational Tools in the Classroom

This presentation will discuss the use of Python and Jupyter notebooks in graduate-level structural dynamics and numerical analysis courses. In particular, it will present the experiences and lessons learned employing Jupyter and Python in classroom and distance learning classes at Oregon State University.

Topics include: simultaneously addressing the novice and advanced student programmer, engagement of students in programming and analysis, and dually introducing programming while teaching the fundamentals of the course material. The presentation will also discuss how to leverage the Jupyter workspace on DesignSafe and open-source SimCenter educational tools to elevate the classroom experience and introduce students early to the multihazard community.
