Permafrost degradation poses major risks to infrastructure systems in Arctic and cold regions, yet these environments remain extremely difficult to study due to remoteness, limited long-term monitoring, harsh environmental conditions, and significant spatial and temporal variability. This presentation discusses how geotechnical centrifuge modeling at the NHERI@UC Davis facility can complement field observations by enabling controlled and accelerated investigation of coupled thaw processes and frozen soil behavior under realistic stress conditions. The work highlights how advanced physical modeling can improve understanding of thaw-induced deformation and support the development of more resilient cold-region infrastructure systems.

Dr. Mohammad Khosravi | Associate Professor Civil Engineering MSU
Mohammad Khosravi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Montana State University. His research focuses on the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of soils, geotechnical earthquake engineering, biomediated geotechnics, and infrastructure resilience in cold regions. His work combines advanced laboratory testing, centrifuge modeling, numerical simulations, and remote sensing approaches to study complex soil behavior and develop sustainable solutions for civil infrastructure under extreme environmental conditions.
