New Trends in Real-Time Hybrid Simulations to Advance Fluid-Structure Interaction Research

February 8-9, 2023 | 9:00am - 5:00pm ET

About the Workshop

The NSF-NHERI Wall of Wind (WOW) Experimental Facility (EF), NSF-NHERI Real-Time Multi-Directional (RTMD) EF at Lehigh University, and the Multi-Hazard Engineering Collaboratory on Hybrid Simulation (MECHS) RTHS in Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) Applications Committee are hosting an in-person two-day workshop at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the need for and challenges in applying real-time hybrid simulation towards research that involves the effects of wind and waves on the civil infrastructure.

Financial support for travel will be available to a number of participants from US institutions. Those seeking travel support must apply by January 6th. Early career researchers including faculty, students and postdocs are particularly encouraged to apply. Financial support for attending the workshop will be awarded for confirmed registrations. More information about bookings and travel arrangements will be provided upon registration.

The discussion topics will include, but not limited to:

  1. Cyber-physical testing approaches towards optimal wind/wave-resilient structures.
  2. Implementation and applications of RTHS aeroelastic and aerodynamic wind testing.
  3. Coupled Aerodynamic and Hydrodynamic Hybrid Simulation.
  4. Hybrid Simulation -FSI testing of wind turbines, tall buildings, bridges, etc.
  5. Hybrid Simulation-FSI testing to assess damping systems in structural systems.

This workshop will provide participants with valuable information about the resources and services available at NSF-NHERI Wall of Wind (WOW) EF and at the NSF-NHERI Real-Time Multi-Directional (RTMD) EF and how to better engage their capabilities for NSF funding. In addition, the workshop will include discussions about recent aero-elastic RTHS capabilities developed by Lehigh and FIU.

The workshop is jointly sponsored by the NSF-NHERI Wall of Wind EF, the NSF-NHERI Real-Time Multi-Directional EF and MECHS.

We look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming workshop! Please register using the form on this page. If you have any questions, contact Ms. Elizabeth Alvite (WOW) at
