NHERI RAPID Facility Field Instrumentation Training Workshop at NCEE

About the Workshop

The Natural Hazard and Disaster Reconnaissance (RAPID) Facility will hold a one-day hands-on training workshop on June 27, 2022, immediately prior to the opening of the 12th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering. The workshop is aimed at earthquake engineering researchers and practitioners who want to learn the fundamentals of laser (lidar) scanning and data processing, and field data collection and analysis using the mobile IOS application RApp (an Android version of RApp will also be available soon).

The workshop venue, on the campus of the University of Utah, is located within walking distance of the 12th NCEE conference facilities. The training workshop activities and topics will include:

  • Hands-on operation and data collection using laser scanning reconnaissance instrumentation, including the lightweight and highly portable Leica RTC360 terrestrial laser scanning system.
  • Introduction to laser scanning data processing and point cloud analysis and visualization.
  • Using the freely available application RApp to collect post-earthquake field data, including photos, notes, instrumentation metadata, field damage surveys, and social sciences- and public health-focused questionnaires.
  • Archiving and visualizing laser scanning and RApp data using the NHERI DesignSafe-CI platform.
  • How to work with the RAPID Facility and access its instrumentation resources to support your earthquake engineering research.


8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Assemble for refreshments and coffee at the University of Utah workshop venue (Layton Auditorium in the Meldrum Engineering Building on the University of Utah campus)
8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Introduction to the RAPID Facility; review of laser scanning instrumentation and RApp, and preparation for field instruction.
9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. In field activity — laser scanning of building on the Univ. of Utah campus
10:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Break
10:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Return to classroom to post-process laser scanning data. Analysis and visualization of point cloud data using the web-based Hazmapper platform (Designsafe-CI) and the open-source desktop application Cloudcompare.
12:00 p.m. - 12:45 p.m. Bring your lunch
12:45 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Field data collection using RApp, archiving field data using Designsafe-CI, visualization of collected field data using the Hazmapper platform.

The workshop will conclude 2.5 hours prior to the welcome reception opening of the 12th NCEE.
