University of Florida NHERI EF
Virtual Workshop Series

Fall 2020 Series

Aug. 27 & 28 | Sept. 28 & 29 | Oct. 21 & 22 | Nov. 16 & 17

The Powell Family Structures and Materials Laboratory at the University of Florida (UF) is one of the designated shared-use Experimental Facilities under NSF’s Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program. The UF NHERI EF is primarily dedicated to studying extreme wind events in its state-of-the-art boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT). Details of the UF NHERI EF can be found at https://ufl.designsafe-ci.org/.

The University of Florida EF is hosting a series of virtual workshops for potential users interested in wind hazard research. The goals of the workshops are to:

  • Introduce potential users to the experimental capabilities offered by the UF NHERI EF
  • Provide details on the services offered to users from proposal development to project close-out
  • Present opportunities for the competitive pursuit of NSF funding and initiate proposals that utilize the EF
  • Facilitate networking with fellow researchers
  • Provide in-depth information on the EF’s novel experimental technologies (Technology Focus areas will vary by workshop; topics to include: Test Automation, Flow Field Modulator, PIV System, and Hybrid Simulation)

Each workshop will be held via Zoom in two, interactive half-day sessions over a two-day period. The first half-day will provide an overview of the facility (the same for each workshop) and the second half-day will include a Technology Focus, an in-depth session on a specific aspect of the EF (different for each workshop). Proposal development meetings between individual researchers and EF personnel will be scheduled in the week following the workshop. Participants interested in more than one Technology Focus are encouraged to register for more than one workshop but only participate in Day One on one occasion.
