Starting/Creating a new account

Many aspects of the DesignSafe-CI are publically accessible, with no user account required. To use the CI in it’s entirety, registering for a user account is suggested.

  1. To register for a new user account, click on the Register button located at the top right corner of the site.
  2. This will direct you to the registration page where you are asked to fill in all the required account information.  After the information has been entered, please click the Register Account button.
  3. Momentarily, you will receive an email confirmation with an Activation link.  Following the activation link will activate your account and log you into the site.
  4. This will take you to your Account Profile page. To begin using the CI, click the DesignSafe-CI logo to return the main page.



Using your existing NEESHub account

  1. It’s simple to get started with DesignSafe-CI using your existing NEESHub account. Click on the Login button at the top right corner of the site.
  2. This will take you to the Login page, find the section marked “NEES Users: Accessing DesignSafe” and click on the button labeled “Access DesignSafe Now.
  3. On the next page, enter your email address associated with your NEESHub account, and you will be guided through the necessary steps in to begin using DesignSafe right away.




  1. To login in to your DesignSafe-CI Account, click the Login button on the top right corner of the site.
  2. This will take you to the Login page. Click on the TACC logo, or the Log in using your TACC Account to log in to the DesignSafe-CI.
  3. After logging in, you will be directed to your Account Profile page. To return to the DesignSafe-CI main page, click on the logo at the top left corner of the site.


DesignSafe and TACC have partnered to provide more seamless account management. When you log in to DesignSafe using your TACC account, you are asked to release your Profile Information. By releasing this information to DesignSafe, it allows the portal read your TACC profile including public information such as name, email address, institutional affiliation, and country of citizenship.



Launching an Application

  1. DesignSafe-CI offeres a lot of applications designed to help manage, maintain, and progress your research.To use or launch an application tied to the DesignSafe-CI, you need to go to the Research Workbench.
  2. And select the Discovery Workspace.
  3. At the top of the Discovery Workspace, you will see a list of available applications.
  4. By clicking on an application, a form will appear on the screen asking you to provide the required information to run the app, inputs, outputs, job details, etc.
  5. Many of these fields can be selected by dragging and dropping files or directories from the Data Depot Browser located to the left of the form.
  6. After the form has been completed, click the Run button at the bottom of the form.
  7. When you job is submitted, you’ll see an affirmation at the top of the form.
  8. The job status can be monitored on the pull out menu to the right of the form.



Uploading a Dataset

  1. To upload a dataset to your DesignSafe account, navigate to the Research Workbench and then to the Data Depot.
  2. Now, select My Data.
  3. Click the Upload button.
  4. Click Choose Files to browse your computer and select your data files or you may “drag and drop” files from your computer to the Drag and Drop section of the form.
  5. When you are ready, click Upload to begin uploading your datafiles to the cloud.
  6. You will be notified when your upload is complete.



Sharing a Dataset

  1. To share a dataset, navigate to the Research Workspace and select the Data Depot.
  2. Next, select My Data.
  3. This will show you a listing of your current and shared datasets.
  4. Select the Actions button next to the dataset you wish to share. The Actions Menu will appear.
  5. From the Actions Menu select Share.
  6. This will show what current accounts the dataset is currently being shared with and what permission the accounts have.
  7. To add a new account to share the dataset with, type in the user’s username and click Share.
  8. It will take moment for the permission to applied and you will be notified with the dataset has been successfully shared.



Searching Public Datasets

  1. To begin using the public datasets available through DesignSafe, first navigate to the Research Workbench and select the Data Depot.
  2. Next, select Public Data.
  3. You will be able to see all the publicly available datasets available. To narrow down the list, enter some search terms in the Search box and hit enter on your keyboard.
  4. Select Action, and then View Metadata from the Action Menu.
  5. This shows all the specifics of the dataset, information about the project, and all associated files and metadata related to experiments.
  6. Clicking on the file link from the experiments tab will direct you to the proper directory within the Data Depot.
