The SimCenter is saddened to learn of the passing of Stephen A. Mahin on February 10, 2018. Founding Principal Investigator and Director of the SimCenter, Mahin assembled a talented multi-university team to realize an inspiring vision for creating new tools to model and eventually mitigate the effects of natural hazards. Building on a long career in earthquake engineering, Mahin brought an inclusive leadership style to the multi-disciplinary team, in the interest of improving decision-making and strengthening community resilience to earthquakes, storms, and other extreme hazards. His colleagues and students will miss his intellectual curiosity and drive to bring a compelling, complex vision to reality.

The NHERI Computational Modeling and Simulation Center (SimCenter) provides researchers access to next-generation computational modeling and simulation software tools, user support, and educational materials needed to advance the capability to simulate the impact of natural hazards on structures, lifelines, and communities. The SimCenter’s cyber-infrastructure framework allows collaborative simulations from various disciplines to be integrated, while accounting for pertinent sources of uncertainty.
