Description:

Researchers from Oregon State University conducted geotechnical explorations at select liquefaction case history sites located throughout Christchurch, New Zealand, in order to evaluate the spatial variability of soils at these sites. The four sites include three where manifestation of liquefaction was observed during at least one of the four events comprising the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence (Avondale Playground, Shirley Intermediate School, Ti Rakau Reserve) and one site where liquefaction manifestation was not observed (38 Meadow St.). The explorations consist of cone penetration tests (CPTs) conducted at a typical spacing of 1.5 m and were placed to take advantage of existing subsurface data at these sites available through the New Zealand Geotechnical Database (NZGD). The horizontal spacing was selected in consideration and prevention of overlapping zones of plastic strain within the subsurface that may result from cone penetration. Each collection includes the electronic CPT data, a table indicating the GPS coordinates, test date, and groundwater table depth for the new and existing NZGD data, and a tabulation of the horizontal spacing between soundings and the relative ground surface elevation. An MS Thesis written by John R. Cary at Oregon State University explores the spatial variability of the soils at these four sites deduced from the new (i.e., available in these collections) and existing subsurface explorations and accompanying laboratory data. This dataset will facilitate the understanding of the stratigraphy of these four sites at the highest resolution considered feasible with cone penetration testing.

This mission included the subsurface investigation of true-false liquefaction case history sites using cone penetration tests (CPTs) in an effort to quantify the spatial variability of the soils at these sites. The four sites included the Avondale Playground, Shirley Intermediate School, Ti Rakau Reserve, and 38 Meadow Street sites. Manifestation of liquefaction was observed at three of the four sites during at least one of the four events comprising the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence (Avondale Playground, Shirley Intermediate School, and Ti Rakau Reserve), whereas evidence of liquefaction was not observed at the 38 Meadow Street site.
