Description:

Seismic isolation represents a pathway to the standardization of advanced reactors. An established regulatory pathway to incorporate seismic isolation into an advanced nuclear power plant will be invaluable for those seeking a license from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). A topical report, funded by the US Department of Energy through its Industry Opportunities for Advanced Nuclear Technology Development (Industry FOA) program, was written to provide a risk-based pathway to implement seismic isolation systems in advanced nuclear reactors. To illustrate the proposed pathway, calculations were made using multiple numerical models that were constructed in the finite element package, SAP2000. These models are made available here and intended to aid end users of the topical report, including analysts designing isolation systems for buildings in general, and nuclear power plants in particular.

Description:

This simulation project supports a topical report, to be submitted to the NRC, that presents a risk-based pathway for implementing an isolation system in an advanced nuclear reactor. The project includes numerical models, constructed in SAP2000, that were used to support the risk calculations presented in the topical report and to illustrate the options available to engineers and analysts designing an isolation system for an advanced nuclear power plant.
