Description:

On 7 August 2023, a quasi-linear convective system tracked through Tennessee, spawning an EF-2 tornado in western Knox County. While no warning was issued for the area, a tornado watch had been, as well as a series of STWs that at times contained tags, either a tornado possible tag or a destructive damage potential tag. We used a survey of the public (n=287) to assess how they developed their perception of tornado likelihood without a tornado warning. Data can be reused to assess other aspects of unwarned tornadoes. The project is unique in that perceptions and actions during unwarned tornadoes are not heavily studied.

Description:

We designed an internet survey on Qualtrics for adults living in Knox County who were present for the EF2 tornado on 7 August 2023. We advertised the survey using social media and flyers. Participants agreed via informed consent and were invited to enter a drawing to win one of ten $100 gift cards. The survey was an expanded version of the NOAA Tornado Post Event Survey (https://hazards.colorado.edu/uploads/basicpage/NOAA%20Tornado%20Post-Event%20Survey_NHC.pdf) , replacing tornado warning questions with STW questions since no tornado warning was issued that day. All questions were likert scale, or other multiple choice-style questions, with one open-ended question at the end to allow participants to provide concluding thoughts. The survey was open from 25 August–15 September 2023. After removing incomplete responses and those from suspected bots, we had a sample of 287 Knox County residents.
