Description:
This investigation will obtain, interpret and disseminate the first shake table results for full-scale bridge columns detailed consistent with current U.S. design practices. This project was going to be carried out at E-Defense, making use of the large mass and test arrangement for testing bridge columns designed with the Japanese Code. With cash flow difficulties the project experienced delays, to the point that it has become more attractive to bring the test to NEES/UCSD. Comparison of results for the U.S. and Japanese specimens with past tests and with analytical simulations will provide a critically needed assessment of the adequacy of reduced-scale models and tests conducted at altered strain rates. Comparison of U.S. and Japanese design practices in light of observed performance will provide new insights into bridge behavior. It will provide missing data needed to increase confidence in analysis methods and validate (or improve) current design methods. The project plans to test a 1.5 m diameter bridge column with a mass of approximately 300 ton placed on top of the column to mobilize inertial forces. The instrumentation will include 200 sensors, of which 40 will be disposable strain gauges.
