NHERI Summer Institute
2019 Registration

Attend the third annual NHERI Summer Institute in San Antonio, Texas, at the UTSA downtown campus June 5-7, 2019

The NHERI Summer Institute will be held on June 5-7, 2019 at University of Texas in San Antonio (UTSA) for K-12 educators, engineers, and researchers who want to learn more about the Natural Hazards Engineering Research (NHERI) community. Participants will learn about:

  • The mission of the NHERI program
  • Writing a grant proposal through grant writing & design workshops
  • Requesting research resources within the NHERI network
  • The NHERI Science Plan
  • Computational research and data management through hands-on participation

All participants—early career professional and faculty, K-12 educators and administrators, and established professionals and faculty—are welcome to attend.

A preliminary schedule of events includes:

  • Day 1:
    • NHERI Science Plan
    • Research grant proposal writing
    • San Antonio excursion
  • Day 2:
    • NHERI network research sites
    • Design of current and potential research projects at NHERI sites
    • Networking event
  • Day 3:
    • Educational and community outreach design
    • Networking event
    • NHERI leadership meetings

During the three days, participants will have opportunities to meet with PIs, K-12 teachers, and an NSF representative. This creates a platform to discuss research grant proposal ideas and potential partnerships.

Travel & Dietary Details

For accurate meal planning and room accommodations, please provide the dates you plan to attend the Summer Institute and details of your arrival.


Some meals will be provided during the Summer Institute. Do you have any dietary restrictions of which the organizers should be aware?


On the evening of Wednesday, June 5th, we are planning an excursion in San Antonio, a boat tour along the historic Riverwalk. Please let us know if you plan to attend and whether you will bring a guest or guests to the event. Enter the total number of guests in your party (include yourself and any children). If you do not plan to participate in the excursion, please enter “0”.

The NHERI Summer Institute is dedicated to promoting diverse participation throughout the hazards research & engineering community. Any information you can provide to help us better understand our participants is greatly appreciated.


A first-generation college student is defined as someone who, at the time of enrollment in their first bachelor's degree, had no parents or guardians who had completed a bachelor's degree.
