The Natural Hazards Engineering Research Summit is a two-day event taking place at two venues in the Washington DC area. Day One convenes at the National Academy of Sciences Building. Day Two takes place at the meeting hotel, the Crystal Gateway Marriot. DAY ONE VENUE | National Academy of Sciences Building
The first day of the summit will be held at the National Academy of Sciences Building. Dedicated in 1924, National Academy of Sciences Building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Albert Einstein Memorial, unveiled in 1979 to commemorate the centennial of the great scientist's birth, is located on the Academy grounds. This building is a rich treasure in the history of engineering in America.
DAY TWO VENUE | Crystal Gateway Marriott
The second day of the summit will be held at the Crystal Gateway Marriot Hotel. Located in the heart of Arlington, VA, the Crystal Gateway Marriott is near Reagan National Airport (DCA) & Washington, DC. The exciting new National Landing development is close by, as are Pentagon City; downtown Washington DC and Old Town Alexandria, easily accessible via the nearby Crystal City Metro.

Official Summit Hotel
The Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia, is the official hotel of the NHERI Research Summit and will be the site of the summit's second day. A group rate discount of $224 a night has been negotiated for summit attendees to cover the nights of October 56, 2022. The rate is available until September 21, 2022.

Traveling to & around DC
The Washington DC area has three major airports, and a network of public transit trains operate around major points of interset and connecting cities like Arlington.
Washington Metro Area Transit Authority will be closing and performing construction on train lines south of Ronald Reagan Airport from Sept 10 Oct 22. While these closures will not directly impact travel between the Summit venues and the airport, there could be schedule changes and delays. Attendees using public transit are advised to check WMATA schedules frequently, especially as the Summit dates are near.
HOTEL & NAS TRAVEL
Attendees staying in the Crystal Gateway Marriott should be aware of the distance between the hotel and the Day 1 venue, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Building. They will need to plan ahead for the trip between the two.
The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Arlington, but the NASB is across the Potomac River near the Lincoln Memorial end of the National Mall. The Metro Blue line has a route along most of the trip, but there will be some walking at both ends with an estimated total travel time of 30-40 minutes.
The Crystal City Metro station is a 0.2 mile walk from the Crystal Gateway Marriott. This station services the Blue and Yellow lines. Be sure to take only a Blue line train.
In order to arrive at the NASB in time for the 8:30am opening remarks Thursday morning, attendees should leave the hotel by 7:45am and take the 7:55am Metro blue line train headed towards Largo Town Center at the latest. Exiting the Metro at Foggy Bottom station on the George Washington University campus will place attendees a few blocks north of the National Mall and near the NASB.
Attendees should err on the side of caution and check the current transit system status frequently as this will be during the DC area morning rush.
